The first Olympic Games were held in Olympia in Greece more than two thousand years ago. They were part of a religious festival, and they took place every four years. At first, there was only one race, but more events were added later. The ancient games continued for centuries before they ended. In 1896, a Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin helped to start the modern games in Athens. Only men took part in that first modern event. Women first competed in 1900. Today, the games are held every four years in a different city, and thousands of athletes from nearly every country take part. The Winter Games, for ice and snow sports, began in 1924. Many people enjoy the games because they bring together people from different cultures, but hosting them is very expensive for a city.
